PLANET RUHNU
Planet Ruhnu was born from the desire to capture and share the uniqueness and beauty of island life on Ruhnu — Estonia's most remote inhabited island in the Gulf of Riga.
We are a sustainable island enterprise founded in 2023, focused on seaweed cultivation, local food production, and ecotourism. Our work bridges traditional island knowledge with modern science and innovation.
What we do:
Seaweed farming and research — cultivating local Baltic Sea seaweed species (Fucus vesiculosus and Ulva intestinalis)
Ringsu Cafe — seasonal farm-to-fork restaurant with fresh fish, organic food, and seaweed-infused dishes
Experimental seaweed kitchen — testing new methods of seaweed processing, fermentation, and culinary application
Island experiences — guided tours, hikes, fishing trips, cycling, beach cleanups, and more
Seaweed gin — award-winning handcrafted gin from locally grown bladderwrack
Research partners:
TFTAK (Centre of Food and Fermentation Technologies), University of Tartu Estonian Marine Institute (advisor: Jonne Kotta), TalTech (Mariliis Kouts)
